Ants are tiny, but the damage they can cause is mighty. Pompano Beach homeowners should do everything in their power to prevent an ant issue. Ants are America's #1 nuisance pest, and once they’ve made themselves at home, good luck getting rid of them! Did you know that there are more than 700 types of ant species found throughout the United States? They can easily become your worst nightmare if not dealt with properly. For more information on the types of ants prone to the area, what an infestation might look like, and how to handle it, read on.

Ants That Are Common To Pompano Beach

As previously mentioned, there are over 700 types of ants wandering around the United States. Here are some that are most commonly found in the Pompano Beach area:

  • Carpenter ants are an extremely common issue. They are larger ants and aptly named. They do not eat wood; rather, they tunnel through it to access their nests. Carpenter ants tend to seek areas with excess moisture and wood that has been softened by fungus, so homeowners should be aware of any rotting wood on their property and dispose of or treat it promptly.

  • Odorous ants are extremely tiny and hard to spot, measuring only 1/16”-⅛” inches in length. They are brown or black in color. These types of ants tend to nest in walls or under floors inside homes; Outside, they can be found in exposed soil or within stacks of firewood. They also come into your home seeking sweet foods like melons and other fruits.

  • Argentine ants are essentially microscopic, measuring 1/16” - ¼” inch. Identifiable by their amber coloring, Argentine ants create colonies near food sources and emit a musky odor if crushed. To prevent an infestation, clean up any spills quickly and remove any potential water sources.

  • Red ants are identified by their fiery coloring and tend to build their nests outdoors near a house’s foundation or in landscaping. While they primarily live outside, this type of ant can gain access to Pompano Beach buildings or homes through AC units or HVAC systems. Lastly, unlike many other ants, red imported fire ants attack when their nest is disturbed and will cause a very painful sting which will result in welting or more severe allergic reactions.

How To Handle An Infestation In Your Pompano Beach Home

Though Pompano Beach homeowners can tidy their homes, take out the trash regularly, and clean up after spills, they can’t always control infestations that occur indoors, outdoors, or inside rotting or fungal wood.

Getting rid of an ant infestation on your own is a nearly impossible task due to the size, depth, and destruction that ants can cause. Some of the challenges that warrant professional involvement include:

  • Colony sizes for ants are enormous and their nests can measure up to seven feet deep.

  • The location of an ant colony is often either located in cracks in cement, inside rotting wood, or in other hard-to-see and reach areas that make infestations very hard to handle.

  • Over-the-counter sprays are a good tool, but they are not always effective. They also introduce chemicals onto your property and into your home which can be hazardous to pets and children.

  • Ants can pose an array of health hazards, so dealing with an infestation on your own could be unsafe.
